Double bad news

Although from monitoring on 22 June it appeared at least one chick had hatched at Nest 5A it is clear the nest has now failed.

Early today both UV and 643 were at the nest initially, but 643 soon flew off. UV was perched on the nestcam.

There was no discernible movement from the nest and any chicks should have been brooded, not left for a long period. Any lingering hope was dashed when 643 intruded on Nest 1A and then landed on Nest 4.

The other bad news is that this morning chick 3 on Nest 1A was taken by a goshawk, despite W6 and KF13’s efforts to protect the nest.

Since then KF13 has been mostly keeping guard perched on the camera. The remaining chicks were subdued – not unexpectedly – until recently when they have started to move around again.

It is a tough day for the ospreys, and the team here, but we can only hope the rest of the season is trouble free.

That’s so sad to read. I hope the Goshawk doesn’t repeat the actions from a season or two ago and come back for the others :-(

I am devastated and heart broken for UV – so now 643 looks for Y1 !!!! Forgive me but I can’t remember Joanna , have 643 and Y1 been bonded in the past ? I thought she was first time breeding .
And as for Goshawks – don’t get me standing on my soap box. I am NOT a fan of Goshawks and never will be and please don’t anyone start preaching ”nature” to me. And I can’t understand why some amongst us think we need more of them !
What a very hard Blog to have to write Joanna. A hug to you.
