A special sighting

My heavy involvement with Kielder Ospreys began during the years YA bred at Nest 1 and then Nest 1A, producing a number of offspring known to have returned to the UK. It is always special to get news of any of them.

2018 Nest 1A male 223/Broomlee was seen on Tweed Valley Osprey Project nests twice in 2023, but until now they were the only reports that he had survived.

With grateful thanks to Lukasz Pulawski for reporting his sighting to RDWF we know 223/Broomlee was alive and fishing successfully at the end of July. Here’s the proof from Lucasz.

Lukasz saw 223/Broomlee NE of Selkirk and south of Cauldshiels Hill Fort, on 27 July.

Given the only previous records were in the TVOP area, it isn’t surprising that 223/Broomlee seems to have settled there.

Many thanks again to Lukasz.

I am reminded of the saga of Blagdon lake in 2013. That was when we first came to know White YA. Then I think we visited Kielder for the first time that year.

I do some voluntary work at Gosforth Park Nature Reserve and a member came to me to say they had seen an Osprey earlier on this year. I saw the photos so know it was an Osprey but there was nothing to show it’s ID. Was it heading to Kielder or further North? I was advised that those Ospreys that visit are normally heading further North than Kielder.

    It’s a mystery.
