I want to thank ‘MM’ whose great sleuthing found a link to this nest that is not easy to find. It is still streaming. The two older chicks are self-feeding and the Dad continues to pile the fish on the nest. Will they be able to eat enough to keep themselves alive? What is wrong with the female? There is something the matter. Whether or not it is the disease that took the fourth falcon at the CBD nest in Melbourne or the Mum in Finland, we don’t know. Or is it HPAI?
Send good wishes to these two osplets for their survival. They certainly need it!
Here is the link. It was working when I checked it.
I went to the UK as a Commonwealth Scholar in 1990 and received my PhD from the University of Leicester in 1993. After three decades of university teaching, I retired to devote my time to the study of raptor behaviour. I am particularly interested in Ospreys and am working on a long term project on third hatch survival and siblicide in these raptors. My blog is a result of a fascination with my local wildlife and the desire to encourage others to love and care for birds! I live on the Canadian Prairies and prior to the pandemic travelled a lot. I am questioning the use of aviation fuel at the moment as we all strive to help our planet. My early research was in politics and art including British public statues exported to Southeast Asia and Vietnam Resistors that contributed much to Canadian ceramics. Books and articles were published on those subjects over a period of 3 decades. Now I am working on books for children so they can learn about the challenges our raptors face.

Frenchman’s Creek–Is there any chance that dad will try to feed his osplets the way M15 did with E21 and E22. A male kestrel on Robert Fuller’s property fed his chicks after mum disappeared (later found deceased). It is not a male kestrel’s job to feed his chicks. He stumbled a bit, but with nudges from Robert, he succeeded in fledging all six chicks.
Way to go Tuffy!! What an appropriate name. And Ruffie for the other one. who lived up to his name!
Hi Cheryl. Sorry for being so late in answering your comment. I have had difficulty keeping up with monitoring the European nests. — It doesn’t appear that the male will try and feed the chicks. His hormones tell him to keep providing food for the nest. I have seen other species do this and I have also seen the males on some of the UK Osprey nests feeding their chicks and even their mates, but not when the female has been ill when they are so little. We can only hope that the older two continue to eat like the one in Finland was able to do and survived. Sadly the camera has gone private so we won’t know the outcome. And yes, Tuffy is a bit of a marvel. He got a great name. Thanks for writing in!
