Hatch for Dylan and Seren…late Tuesday in Bird World

19 May 2026

Oh, goodness. My Britishness is coming out in droves lately as I do nothing but complain about our cold weather. The forecast is for it to be 30 C next week. I am serious. I wonder how the birds are managing with such a roller coaster spring?

At Loch Garten, Myrtle finally left her eggs and was away for 3.5 hours. I hope she ate fish after fish! KL5 has not been seen on camera since Saturday. We know that she cannot raise these little ones on her own. Let us send ‘good wishes’ that these eggs do not hatch! And then Myrtle left again and an unringed male pushed the eggs to the edge of the nest. Myrtle returned and pushed them back in the nest cup and she is incubating again.

UKOI posted a video of an unringed male kicking Myrtle’s last two eggs out of the nest bowl. KL5 has been missing since Saturday. Myrtle waited and waited to save her eggs, but today she had to leave and fish for herself. https://youtu.be/iIVjxjMuw5U?

Great screen capture of P3 standing tall right in front of its big siblings!

A hawk feeding its chicks in a nest, with three chicks visible and remnants of prey in the nest.

Ah, they just cannot leave the raptors alone – this time in North Yorkshire.

It is the same issue here. Fines are not enough to stop people from killing wildlife. So what would? 1000 hours of working in a rescue? or more? Plus a huge donation to a rehab or rescue?? Any thoughts?

More humans being not so smart! Geemeff sends us this:

Stupid humans – why? Just, why? This nest has been in use for more than ten years and was active during the destruction!https://www.koin.com/news/portland/active-osprey-nest-on-ne-portland-cell-tower-intentionally-obstructed-neighbors-say/

This is a great post on ‘why’ the eaglets need a necroscopy to rule out poison! Also human caused.

@everyone

I’ve seen the posts and comments about the passing of the two eaglets at this nest.

Also seen the extensive speculation about the cause of their death. And this is where I want to put the breaks on for everyone.

In recent years, it became waaaay too convenient for the wildlife organizations to label practically EVERY eagle death Avian flu. By doing so, it saves manpower, saves money, and promotes negligence of one’s duty in the name of “safety of humans”. And as usual, wildlife pays the price as the real cause of their demise is well veiled from view and from preventive measures.

There are several other ailments that have very similar symptoms to Avian flu. One of them happens to be rat poisoning. The symptoms are eerily similar too AF. It also happens to be the time of the year when rodents are multiplying. The detriment rodenticide causing to eagles, raptors and all type of predators is well documented and known fact. Yet, for some reason, legislation is refusing to address this issue. There are far more human ways to kill a rodent that is also harmless on the wildlife environment. Rat poison nearly killed Harriet several years ago and took the life of E14, among many other eagles. Of course, rat poison is also man-made that would have mandated an intervention by the appropriate wildlife organizations.

Without performing a necropsy, I don’t care how experienced one is, nobody can make a medical conclusion by viewing an animal through a camera lense. There’s a reason that even washed up or breached whales are necropsied to find the cause of their death. The eagles are no exception.

I know what is posted in their group site. If they want to accept and believe an assumption as fact, it’s their decision. We are obligated to report on facts. According to members living in that area, there are no reports of an AF outbreak. And again, without a reliable test at a minimum, or a necropsy, we don’t have facts regarding their death.

The sad part is, that until the wildlife authorities are willing to actually carry out their duty to protect the wildlife entrusted on them, similar catastrophes will continue on.

Thank you ‘PB’ for drawing this post to my attention! It is true. If we call it Avian Flu (as I have) and we will not know for sure without a necroscopy, it could be poison! Certainly there are too many people willing to put cyanide bombs all over the land and this poison quickly makes it way up the food chain. Little ones suffer – but we will not know until bodies are taken and tested.

I am grateful to our Premier, Wab Kinew, who has followed Australia’s lead and restricted social media use. This also means that AI and all social media will be out of classrooms. Maybe books will come back in style. Our granddaughter, Elysha, who is now living in Australia, reports that parents are actually doing things with their children since the ban. She also says that people are talking to one another instead of staring into their phones all the time. Maybe we don’t need all that data after all.

Disgusting human garbage. Maybe we should each donate an afternoon a month to helping clean up the environment for the birds. This poor swan.

Geemeff’s Woodland Trust daily summary for Loch Arkaig Tuesday 19th May 2026

Calm and routine again today as has been the pattern for a few days – long may it continue. It rained on and off but the eggs on both nests were kept protected and the males brought fish to their mates as usual. Some sleuthing was needed but sharp eyes determined that the fish remnant on Nest One when the cam came back online was indeed a new fish therefore Garry LV0 was credited with two deliveries, taking his tally to seventy. Louis delivered two fish as well taking his tally to seventy equal with Garry, with the Nest Two tally at seventy two. Tonight’s forecast is light rain and light winds with a low of 9°C, continuing through tomorrow with a high of 14°C. Congratulations to Woodland Trust who received a gold medal for winning their category All About Plants Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, link to the article in the bonus section.

Wondering, why would a swan pick pick such a place to nest to begin with?
