Death on Finnish nest, first chick in ten years on another…

8 June 2026

Hello,

This is a late short posting. We had a lovely, calm day – a nice walk with a cool breeze before the heat set in. After 1500, the shade graces the little bistro table on the lower deck, and it is a nice time to spend outdoors with Toby and Don, sipping lemonade and having a nice, sweet snack! I have just been so excited that Clark has returned to be with ‘our’ Iris (and his) that I am beside myself. Our roof could blow off and I do not think it would phase me for a single moment. This is, to me, a miracle. I had a horrible feeling in my gut but it seems that he truly had to wait or go a distance to get a fish to bring home. What a guy.

Lumi, the longtime female on the Muonio nest in Lapland, was preyed upon by a goshawk on 6 June 2026. Kajo, her mate, tried to incubate their unhatched. Sadly, they had to be abandoned.

The image below is a series of portraits of Lumi from the nest in 2022.

We have already seen the Lynx at one of the Finnish nests which is quite frightening. I hope to never see this again.

For the first time in a long time, there are three lively chicks at Seili Island that hatched on 1, 3, and 5 June. Adults are Hildur and Stefu.

Information under streaming cam:

Hildur saapui 14.4 ja Stefu (TFS) 15.4
Muna munittiin 25.4, 28.4 ja 1.5
Poikaset kuoriutuivat 1.6, 3.6 ja 5.6

Hildur arrived on 14 April and Stefu (TFS) on 15 April
Eggs were laid on 25 April, 28 April and 1 May
Chicks hatched 1 June, 3 June and 5 June

Incubating at Paltamon nest. The adults are Liisa and Tommi (Yellow TNN). Four eggs were laid. Egg 1 on 30 April, which Tommi broke. Egg 2 on May 3, egg 3 on May 6, and egg 4 on May 9.

For the first time in ten years, an Osprey egg was laid at the Yllaslompolo Osprey nest near Akaslompolo, Finland on 16 May. The couple are Veera and Tapula. There is only one egg.

There are three chicks at the Janakkalan osprey nest. There is a new female. This is the information on the nest:

New female Ulpu (XLL) arrived on 7 April and AKE on 9 April

Eggs were laid on 18 April (Aake destroyed it), 21 April, 23 April and 26 April Chicks hatched 28 May and 30 May

I will try and keep a close eye on these nests and others in Finland, Denmark, and Germany. In past years I have done this and was reminded when the Lynx visited nest #5 that I needed to catch up on what was happening with our Northern European nests.

In Scotland, Aurora might be hearing a chick in the one and only egg on Loch Arkaig nest 1 (Louis and Aila’s former nest). Geemeff will be posting a video of Aurora listening in her daily summary.

Please help our wildlife. Saving Monarchs reminds us with this poster:

More rain today, and two fish delivered to each nest. Garry LV0’s tally for Nest One now stands at one hundred and six, and the Nest Two tally at one hundred and nineteen. No pip yet for Garry and Aurora’s egg, at Day 39 it is right in the middle of the 37-42 day hatching window. However, at one point Aurora 536 was very focused on the egg, concentrating with tilted head – is the egg talking to her, does she hear something out of human range? Fingers crossed for the pair that their single egg is viable. Having a single chick might not be a bad thing – over on Nest Two, the chicks, eldest not yet in the reptilian phase, are fighting. It’s mainly Chick1 who’s the aggressor, bashing C2 and C3, but C2 is standing up for itself while little C3 has the good sense to duck out of the way. Much more of this to come, sensitive folk might want to heed George WTS’ warning about the potential perils of nest cam watching. It’s raining at the time of filing this report (midnight) and the forecast is more rain overnight with a low of 8°C, changing to thundery showers tomorrow and a high of 13°C.

Thank you so much for being with us today. We had good news and bad…I am still elated that Clark is home. I don’t think anything could shake me. Take care. See you soon! We are on pip watch at Hellgate Canyon and at Loch Arkaig nest 1.

Thank you to Geemeff and to everyone who contributed information on FB and to the Finnish Osprey Foundation for their streaming cams and information.
