I was going to save the news for tomorrow but, I couldn’t. Earlier in the day the eagles had been working on the nest. I commented that when they brought in soft nesting material for the egg bole we could then be watching for an egg. Well guess what?
Jackie brought in the nesting material. Laid down in the nest bole for over an hour and laid her first egg! Wow. It is the first time I have caught her live. What a lovely moment. Congratulations Jackie and Shadow.
Time 1600.
Thanks to FOBBV for the streaming cam where I took my screen captures.
I went to the UK as a Commonwealth Scholar in 1990 and received my PhD from the University of Leicester in 1993. After three decades of university teaching, I retired to devote my time to the study of raptor behaviour. I am particularly interested in Ospreys and am working on a long term project on third hatch survival and siblicide in these raptors. My blog is a result of a fascination with my local wildlife and the desire to encourage others to love and care for birds! I live on the Canadian Prairies and prior to the pandemic travelled a lot. I am questioning the use of aviation fuel at the moment as we all strive to help our planet. My early research was in politics and art including British public statues exported to Southeast Asia and Vietnam Resistors that contributed much to Canadian ceramics. Books and articles were published on those subjects over a period of 3 decades. Now I am working on books for children so they can learn about the challenges our raptors face.

Thanks for the news, Mary Ann! Glad you got to watch it happen!! I had a feeling Jackie would be laying an egg soon as it seems she’s been testing out the nest bowl so much the last couple of days. Hopefully the weather will improve there now – though I remember last year she was buried in snow a couple of times while brooding. It didn’t seem to bother her though. (Actually I worry more about the wind!)
I was just lucky this time. it normally doesn’t happen! When she brought in the nesting material in the afternoon I felt sure it would be another 24 hours. Jackie surprised us all!!!!!!!
Congratulations to Jackie and Shadow ! Looking forward to another season of their super eagle parenting. Thanks again, Mary Ann, for keeping us posted on the wonderful news!
