Sunday in Bird World

27 April 2025

Good Morning Everyone,

Late Update: ‘BAH’ writes of the Port of Ridgefield Osprey Nest: “Female layed egg right at sunset, about 7:55pm. I’ve waited until I actually had a glimpse of the egg to write you. She just did her first enfluffeling, right after her mate saw the egg for the first time.”

I would like to draw your attention to the Cape Henlopen FB group. Please think about joining. The pair is bonding and this could become a very good nest to observe! Videos, history, etc!

Heidi’s nest note:
The Great Bay osprey nest in New Hampshire has their first egg.  It was laid on 4/26, just before 7 p.m.

Joan Castnyer at the Eschenbach Nest: “As we predicted, there was a possibility of a fourth egg this weekend. And so it has been. This afternoon, around 8:30 pm, we were able to see, glimpsed first and much more clearly a few moments later, that Hermine had laid egg number four. Herbert has had his work cut out for him, this year.”

Thank you to those who sent me images of their weekend adventures – walks through the woods, hikes through the hills, and bird watching. It makes me so happy that you were outside enjoying what nature has to offer us and taking it all in.

It was really a gorgeous day on the Canadian Prairies. Another day, trying to tease us into believing that spring has arrived. We won’t be fooled. We have had heavy snow and frosts in May. Most flowers will not be planted til Victoria Weekend towards the end of May. It doesn’t stop us from going to the nurseries to look at what might our garden the oasis that we want.

Geemeff’s daily summary for all things happening at Loch Arkaig for The Woodland Trust:

Woodland Trust daily summary for Loch Arkaig Saturday 26th April 2025

While most of the action was on Nest One today, over on Nest Two, Dorcha tracked a nearby Cuckoo and used her special voice to get rid of a Hooded Crow while waiting for Louis to bring fish. He did, but only delivered one today, so his tally now stands at fifty two. Garry LV0 by contrast brought three fish for Blue 536, taking his tally to twenty one, although he did tease her by showing her the second fish then immediately flying away with it. But he brought it back within ten minutes, neatly opened and ready to eat. He made several mating attempts which she broadly tolerated, but more practice and more fish is needed. Blue 536 brought nesting material for the first time and spent a little while arranging things which is a very promising indication of ownership, even if she promptly knocked some of it overboard. The day ended with a visit from a Tawny Owl in the twilight gloom right before night cam switched over. The forecasted rain didn’t really happen, just a bit of light drizzle, however, heavy rain is expected tonight and tomorrow.

Night cam switches on (day cam): Nest One 21.55.56 (04.58.22); Nest Two 21.54.14 (05.04.18)

Lipka Forest, Poland: First egg appears on 16 April. I need to find the live stream as there must be a full clutch by now.

There were three on the 22nd.

Clark PUD: Has three eggs as of the 22nd of April.

Hellgate Canyon: No matter how much we wished and prayed, Finnegan did not return to Iris’s nest in 2025; that glorious year they had in 2024 will be remembered forever.

Individuals have observed that Louis has not been around as persistently as in other days. That is likely because Star has laid her first egg.

Boulder County: Beautiful place for an osprey nest.

Trempealeau Bald Eagles: Mum continues to do a good job for her only surviving eaglet.

After Mr T took two more fish from this nest meant for his chick and flew them over to the other nest, Mrs T got up and went to fish for her and her baby. https://youtu.be/iTINMBehZb4?

Xcel Energy Fort St Vrain: Two surviving eaglets are losing their baby down and getting a thick coat of wooly thermal down.

Big Bear Valley: Flapping and hoping were the order of the day until the snow started falling and Sunny and Gizmo decided to pancake and cuddle.

IWS Adoption Challenge: “The IWS Nest Adoption challenge is still ongoing and runs thru June 15th. All donations enter you into a drawing for the opportunity to name an eaglet or win other gifts that will be given away.”

Check out the other gifts here: https://www.iws.org/2025-nac-gifts and you can donate here:https://www.iws.org/nest-adoption-cha…

Some of our readers have travelled to visit the area and others have gotten a chance to name the eaglets or get high quality photographs.

Fraser Point: Eaglets of Andor and Cruz doing marvellously well.

ND-LEEF nest: Gigi and Dad have had a failed nest this year.

Johnson City-ETSU: The eaglet looks as big as Mum, Jolene.

Bluff City ETSU: Hope and Chandler are bringing in plenty of food. Eaglets are attempting self-feeding.

Duke Farms: There is not enough food coming on this nest.

Romanian Golden Eagle Cam: The final egg has hatched. It will be the only eaglet if it survives. The young female does not appear to understand to brood her chick and keep it warm. It appears that she might have tried to feed this one. Outcome is unclear.

A beautiful osprey renesting!

100 Swan Nests:

NEFlorida: Gabby brought a fish for Bodie on Saturday. Thank you! Beau has not been seen for more than two days now. Juvie has not been seen for a week.

Please send your good wishes to the Denton Homes, Decorah, and Trempeauleau nests and all others. The weather is to get really bad on Monday.

Thank you all for being with us today. Incubation is actively progressing at most osprey nests, and we’re thrilled to keep you updated! Heidi will continue providing insights on the nests in the U.S., while I will primarily focus on monitoring the Canadian and European nests, as well as those in the U.K. Our cherished female eagle at the Trempeauleau Bald Eagles nest is holding strong, which is truly heartening. It’s disappointing, however, that the two females didn’t form a connection like the remarkable pair at Tweed Valley. Your support and interest in these remarkable birds make all the difference!
