Hello Everyone from a very overcast and humid day on the Canadian Prairies. We have been for our walk – everyone is fed including Mr Crow who was cawing so loud you could have heard him a kilometer away. Did he think we could forget to feed him? Surely not! All of the birds have been eating much more than usual. Migration is beginning and some of the songbirds that were here earlier in the summer heading north will be making an appearance. The hawks and falcons are ready! Sharpie was here a few days ago and a Peregrine Falcon was on the fence checking out the offerings last night. I didn’t get a good image of him. If I look out across the back lane I can see the leaves have a slight fall tinge – and the air tells me autumn is coming. The basket has wood in it by the stove and this morning I threw on a jumper.
‘AE’ sent me a lovely note and this image of stamps! “They came out before Jackie’s illness.” Fantastic.

We will always keep Jackie close to our heart. She was simply an exceptional bald eagle and was loved around the world.
KD1, who has been with Shadow and on the nest, has been named Kaydee. I know that we will welcome her just as we did when M15 lost Harriet and F23 came to the nest.
Please keep the people of the Hawaiian islands and the albatross in your thoughts as Hurricane Kala strengthens again.

One of our long-term Bird World followers lives on Oahu. They sent me their weather news and, fortunately, did not lose power. Our thoughts remain with the people and wildlife of these islands.
Geemeff’s Woodland Trust daily summary for Loch Arkaig Thursday 20th August 2026
No sign of Amber today, nor of the Nest One residents, just Louis and Juniper. Louis brought her four fish – the first was lost overboard when Louis couldn’t or wouldn’t release the fish and pulled Juniper off the nest as he flew off with it. But both were unhurt, and Louis more than made up for it with three more quick deliveries. So much fish that Juniper couldn’t eat it all and there are two decent size partial fish on the nest tonight. Will Juniper get them tomorrow before the Hoodies, who were around today? Will Amber make a sudden reappearance and grab one or both? As always, it’s wait and see. The Nest One tally remains at two hundred and one which may well be the closing total, and the Nest Two tally rises to four hundred and forty eight. A small raptor was around the nest and divebombed Juniper but other than a few Hoodies and a lot of screaming, she had a peaceful fish-filled day today. It rained lightly during the day but should be dry, cloudy and cool overnight with a low of 8°C, continuing cool tomorrow with sunny spells and a possibility of light rain showers with a high of 14°C.

I continue to receive letters of concern over Tiny, Little 4, at the Blackbush nest. Fiery squabbles have erupted over fish deliveries. There are some deliveries on the nest but there could be deliveries elsewhere. We do not know what is happening off camera. Please remember that. No one is on the nest tonight. It was really windy during part of the day. You could see it in the feathers of the osprey that was on the nest at that time. (Middle image)

Beau has been seen perched on the LY branch – slightly out of view of the camera but confirmed by the moderator. Personally I am getting excited for Gabby to return to the nest but that could be another fortnight.

Phoenix was returned to the area around the nest at Sandpoint yesterday. Photographers photographed him at sites around the nest with the parents today. I have no news on whether a fish was delivered at any point.
We are used to seeing Wensi get fed on the nest and Wensi is certainly there on and off during the day fish calling and flying off. What you want to bet that healthy youngster is being fed elsewhere?

Lady is very experienced at caring for little sea eaglets. We have watched her mature over the years. She is a devoted Mum.

Awheo, the Royal Cam chick, was banded two days ago. Here is the video of that momentous event by Cornell Bird Lab: https://youtu.be/r7-zYGwilA8?si

The Ps are still seen around the Cornell campus. Arthur was even captured on the Nest cam yesterday.
Two of the four at the Poole Harbour Carey’s Secret Garden nest waiting and hoping for a late fish delivery.

Migration is underway and this is Hawk Mountain’s most recent count:

The Sharp-shinned hawk was back in our garden today. I didn’t see any songbird lunch today.
We had a lovely day. Our daughter was here for a lovely visit. We had several walks in the cool, nearly autumn-crisp air. We also cleaned up some of the front garden that has gotten a little out of hand. The rain and heat have made the Virginia creepers grow like really bad weeds. It was a pleasure being outside.
We hope that you have a lovely end of the week. This is just a tiny tip of what is happening with the birds. Migration is coming and female ospreys have either left or are trying to wean their juveniles off of them feeding so they can get their bodies prepared for their long flights. In other locations, the females are still busy delivering fish.

We can make a difference. A good read from The Guardian on rewilding your own garden:

If you support the osprey cam at either Glaslyn or Loch Arkaig, there are two really good fundraisers being run on their behalf by Mary Cheadle. Check out Friends of Loch Arkaig FB for details. The cost is 5 GBP and you have a chance to win 20 prizes at the Loch Arkaig draw. Two hand painted images of Teifi and Elen by Svetlana are on offer for the Glaslyn draw.

Thank you so much for being with us today. See you soon.
Thank you to SK Hideaways, Geemeff, and the Cornell Bird Lab for their videos. I am grateful to everyone who posted information on FB and the owners of the streaming cams that let us watch these amazing families. I am always grateful to The Guardian for its coverage on the environment.
Thanks Mary Ann for tell the updates and photos today. It was so hot here again. This year I look forward to Fall and the baking and beautiful leaves.
Have a good evening and prayers for all who need them in Hawaii and everywhere with the heat alerts.
See you here soon !
