Would you believe it if someone told you that two little eaglets on top of a hydro pole, one just hatched and another hatching, could be rescued and saved? No fledge as yet but both Juniper 8P7 and Amber 8P6 were hop, skip and jumping over the nest today, balancing precariously on the edge, peering down into the depths, and doing helicopters. Juniper hasn’t yet gone off the screen as Amber has but she’s getting closer all the time. So it’ll be eyes peeled tomorrow watching for that magic moment when they find their wings and go off into the big wide world that’s waiting beyond the nest. There were more intruders about – perhaps newly fledged from nearby, or more likely unattached older birds looking for their own nests and mates – but no one came near enough to bother the chicks. Louis brought five fish, taking the Nest Two tally to three hundred and thirty four, and causing a tug of trout between Dorcha and a determined Juniper. But it was all fairly low key with none of the aggressive assertiveness we’ll see once the chicks go into hyperphagia, when Louis can expect to get his leg pulled or even bitten as the chicks fight to get to the fish first. Actually, it’s not just the chicks – Dorcha accidentally got his foot instead of the fish today but soon let go with no harm done. Over on Nest One, Aurora was calling for fish but Garry arrived and mounted her instead, choosing to reaffirm their bond with a mating attempt. His total remains at one hundred and eighty two. It didn’t rain as much as forecast and should remain dry overnight with a low of 10°C, changing to light rain and a gentle breeze tomorrow with a high of 17°C.
