While I will endeavour to stick to the Monday and Thursday regular posting, if there is ‘breaking’ news, I will send it out.
Each one of us will have mixed feelings about this post. We loved dear Akecheta. To see him injured on the 19th of January and now, 29 days later for Thunder to lay an egg with her new mate, is just a bittersweet moment.
While we might not know what happened to Akecheta, you can count on the eagles and, in this instance, Thunder to know precisely the circumstances. She did not bond with the eagle that fought with Akecheta. Rather, she has taken a younger eagle, one we hope will have the energy and enthusiasm to provide well for her and their family.
To put a smile on your face: The reason Hugo Yugo is so special. Cuddled having a nap in the armpit.
Take care everyone. Thanks to the IWS/Explore for their camera and to ‘J’ for the alert.
I went to the UK as a Commonwealth Scholar in 1990 and received my PhD from the University of Leicester in 1993. After three decades of university teaching, I retired to devote my time to the study of raptor behaviour. I am particularly interested in Ospreys and am working on a long term project on third hatch survival and siblicide in these raptors. My blog is a result of a fascination with my local wildlife and the desire to encourage others to love and care for birds! I live on the Canadian Prairies and prior to the pandemic travelled a lot. I am questioning the use of aviation fuel at the moment as we all strive to help our planet. My early research was in politics and art including British public statues exported to Southeast Asia and Vietnam Resistors that contributed much to Canadian ceramics. Books and articles were published on those subjects over a period of 3 decades. Now I am working on books for children so they can learn about the challenges our raptors face.

Thank you Mary Ann and it’s really nice to get this from you !
Congratulations to Thunder and a new young Eagle. I wonder if he’s the father? Also wonder where is akecheta. Hopefully he survived and moved on. ❤️🙏🦅
Yes, Makaio would have been. We lost poor Akecheta on the 19th of January. I wish to see Cheta fly in like a super hero, but I fear that he died on Tor.
Good Morning Lady,
Very much appreciate your informative posts, no matter when they are… Our temps are 20″s for highs, single digits at night..Keeping pretty Girl warm the very best I can, and so far, so good..My son built a great shelter for her on the front porch.. Microwave Gel pads (wrapped) to keep her warm day/night…She & I are so looking forward to spring and a bit warmer temps.. I also feed the squirrels I see in our tree
Your girls melt my heart… Take care, stay warm & safe and TY for your posting of God’s creatures…God Bless ….. Sincerely JanMarie
Thank you for your lovely letter, Jan. And thank that son of yours for helping keep Pretty Girl warm in this cold. Microwave Gel pads. Now that is something I need to look into. I appreciate that information….I don’t know what I would do without The Girls. They enrich my life so much more than I ever do for them. I just wish life were easier and people could keep their pets. So many beautiful fur babies being abandoned as prices on everything goes up and up. All the best!
