The tree climber made it the nest and successfully removed the fishing line. ND17 remains on the nest with River. ND18 has been taken into care. This is the wonderful news that we have been waiting for. Do not ever let anyone tell you that it is impossible to help eaglets that have been endangered by humans. Believe and Try!
UPDATE: RESCUE WAS A SUCCESS. Thank you American Eagle Foundation: DH18 has been rescued and was taken for care and DH17 is still in nest. Line removed. River watched but didn’t interfere.

I went to the UK as a Commonwealth Scholar in 1990 and received my PhD from the University of Leicester in 1993. After three decades of university teaching, I retired to devote my time to the study of raptor behaviour. I am particularly interested in Ospreys and am working on a long term project on third hatch survival and siblicide in these raptors. My blog is a result of a fascination with my local wildlife and the desire to encourage others to love and care for birds! I live on the Canadian Prairies and prior to the pandemic travelled a lot. I am questioning the use of aviation fuel at the moment as we all strive to help our planet. My early research was in politics and art including British public statues exported to Southeast Asia and Vietnam Resistors that contributed much to Canadian ceramics. Books and articles were published on those subjects over a period of 3 decades. Now I am working on books for children so they can learn about the challenges our raptors face.

This is wonderful news! 🦅💕🦅💕
It is! The best! We have all learned something. If we know there is the right thing that needs to be done, then we need to find a way to do it and stand up for those that can’t help themselves. Sadly, DH18 suffered and might not be able to live in the wild because of the delay but, he is alive and DH17 is with Mum. River will be able to fledge an eaglet this year which is a good thing.
Such good news.
I read that poor 18 needs surgery. I hope the rescue wasn’t too late for her.
DH18 is in the best of care with the AEF and its team of experts. The monofilament lines cut through the tissue in its legs poor baby and all those days in pain drained it. We all hope for a quick recovery from its surgery and a release! I am very hopeful but I am also angry that the folks on the DH chat and I mean the one moderator were so obstructive to this rescue happening. The eaglets were not OK! We move forward knowing there is a tree climber in Knoxville TN that can do anything! Thank goodness for Dwyer!
Great!!! Thanks for the update, but thanks even more for keeping us informed of the situation at Dale Hollow, which was so important to help mobilize the support that made this rescue possible. Thank you, Mary Ann, and to all who wrote of their concern!!!!
Isn’t it fantastic! As so many of us know, from years past, the voices of the people can make a difference and this time for the good of those two little eaglets. It appears that DH18 will be going off to the AEF in Pigeon Creek and not back to the nest. He will get the best of care there. Such a relief!
Dear Mary Ann, Thank you for letting us know!
I’m so happy!
I didn’t sleep until I heard the news!
Thanks to all involved in the rescue!!💖
It is just the best news! I think everyone deserves a good rest today…including those amazing people who worked so hard for those eaglets!
WONDERFUL NEWS ! THANK YOU MARY ANN!
Thank you Mary Ann! Prayers answered!
So glad for the eaglets and thank you AEF and all involved that helped with this rescue!
Linda
Yes, it is wonderful. The folks that gathered to help last year came together this year! It appears that DH18 will go to the AEF in Pigeon Creek.
So pleased that a rescue was possible
It is amazing what can be done. So grateful. The little one is in care and will go to the AEF in Pigeon Creek, TN. It seems that it is not able to go back to the nest. It was such a relief to hear that the intervention was a success! Of course this reminds me of the little one at Lach Arkaig. Are there policies for rescues there – to get its leg unstuck so it can stay in the nest?
Thank you Mary Ann for this great news! I was awake worrying last night… Much appreciation to you for keeping us all informed – and for helping to spread the word on cases such as these. Such a relief!!
Hi Betty, it was a pleasure to be a speck in the cog of people that helped the Dale Hollow eaglets. We learned so much — never give up!
