3 little ones at Moorings Park….late, late Saturday in Bird World

7 March 2022

Hello Everyone,

It is late. I have been worried about Toby all day. As you are aware, he has HGE, and he had some blood in his stool this morning. I am not panicking, just monitoring and worrying, aka wringing my hands. It is entirely possible that it is the raw tenderloin from his birthday dinner; this is what the vet is thinking. I am overly sensitive since he had to spend four nights in the emergency vet clinic in late December, and I almost lost him! The Girls and Toby are often the glue that holds my life together when my husband’s dementia gets the best of me.

Toby had a wonderful birthday. New slush suit, sweaters, and hopefully a few indestructible toys! Please send him your good wishes. I hope everything is alright tomorrow, or it will be a rush to the emergency vet.

There is so much news in Bird World that I cannot keep up with all the happenings.

There are now three of the cutest little osplets at the nest of Harry and Sally at Moorings Park. Harry is one super dad and fish are plentiful.

Sally had some fish for herself when the babies were sleeping.

I am partial. I am so glad that osprey season is here – with all the bonking, the siblicide – the works. Those cute little bottoms with that light down, the dark line by the eye to protect them from the glare so they can see to do those amazing dives, even that ugly oily phase with the copper coloured feathers! Bring it on!!!!!!!!

After a 21-hour absence, Jackie (who scared the life out of many of us) has returned safely to the nest. Then she left again, leaving Shadow to incubate the eggs. Is there a female intruder in the area? I hope not. I hope she is just taking a much-needed break.

That cute Only eaglet at Duke Farms is getting its thermal down. Are there even a few pin feathers coming in??? There is enough food for several eaglets – there are no worries at this nest.

Mr North is not with us but we have the first egg for Mrs DNF and the New Male at the Decorah North Nest today.

Bluff City now has two little eaglets for Frances and Franklin at the ETSU nest. OK. Baby eaglets are also adorable!

One eaglet has hatched at the Kansas City nest of Ellie and Harvey and the second one is on pip watch. The first hatch has been named Osage.

There are now 52 new baby Kakapo. ‘J’ writes: “There are now just as many chicks, as there were adults 30 years ago when the recovery project started!!”

‘J’ also sent an article about everything you should know about Kakapo (thank you!): https://earth.org/?endangered-species=endangered-species-spotlight-kakapo

Another osprey nest with a couple arriving. The PKS nest – a new one to me but it is all over FB. It is the Pine Knolls Osprey Nest in North Carolina. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/live/7-wS9I-fj1w?

We all miss Annie and her mates at The Campanile. It seems unthinkable that no falcons are breeding at that magnificent site. ‘B’ has sent me the following note with links to articles. I urge you to read them to understand only one of the dangers that all of our avian friends face. “I thought you might be interested in this article on the impact of avian flu on Peregrine Falcons in the SF Bay Area, which appeared on the SFGATE website::

https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/bird-flu-peregrine-falcons-21959370.php

(SFGATE is a digital news site owned by Hearst.  Hearst also owns the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper, but SFGATE operates independently of the Chronicle.)

The article discusses results of a study conducted by a team of scientists from several institutions, where among other things they monitored occupancy of 47 known Peregrine Falcon nesting sites in the greater Bay Area.  The decline of Peregrine population since the avian flu arrived in wild birds in the state in 2022 is reflected by the observation that nearly all of the 47 nest sites were occupied each year between 2000 and 2022, but in 2023 only 65% of the sites were occupied, and only 36% were occupied in 2025.

Here also is the abstract of the scientific study that the SFGATE article is based on:

https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2026.02.11.705416v1

Thank you, B.

Heidi reports that Marilyn has returned to the Old Town Home Osprey nest in Maryland.

‘PB’ sent me a note that there are now four eggs at the Fort St Vrain Bald Eagle nest.

Thank you so much for being with us for this quick post. We will be back on Monday. In the meantime, take care of yourselves.

Thank you to ‘B, H, J, PB’ for their letters and all the great information and articles they sent. Thank you to the owners of the streaming cams and to the authors of FB posts for generously spreading the information of happenings on the nest!

Nest Adoptions, Fledges, Ospreys, and more…Late Wednesday brief check on Bird World

4 March 2026

Good Evening Everyone,

This is just a quick posting.

First, some good news, the eldest fledged at the Dade County Bald Eagle nest of Ron and Rose today.

Ospreys are arriving! Word has come from Viki that one osprey has landed in Indian Creek; they do not normally arrive until after St Patrick’s Day. The couple are at the Danville nest, and Heidi sends word that ospreys are arriving in Colonial Beach.

The IWS nest challenge is underway. Many of us have received merchandise and I am happy to say that at least two of us have been asked to name an eaglet.

Funds continue to come in to purchase the land known as Moon Camp near Jackie and Shadow’s nest to keep it out of the hands of developers. In a blink of an eye, or so it seems, nearly $750,000 of the 10 million needed has been raised. Congratulations to everyone.

I remain saddened by the death of F23 and the continuing controversy over the COD. In the end, it doesn’t matter if someone shot her because it is illegal. If she died because of a road accident and somehow managed to get herself into a garden known to her, then that is a different story. It is possible for eagles to have an injury and fly and later die as we have seen many who fall, hit their head, and die of a concussion later. I do not have enough information to comment other than it is simply a sad day for M15, E26 and all who loved this young mother.

I have lots of news to share but I am simply worn out. We will be celebrating Toby’s first birthday hopefully this week – it is tomorrow. Thankfully he can’t read a calendar. I found a photo of him just after he had arrived and managed to climb the cat tree for the first time.

His birthday wish is a box of Kleenex all to himself with no interference. I don’t think so.

Thank you for being with us today. Please take care. I hope to be back at the weekend or Monday.

Thank you to the owners of the streaming cams and those who post information on FB. My blog would not be the same without your generous sharing.

Hatch and pip for Sally and Harry

2 March 2026

Hello Everyone,

Heidi brought me the good news: “Moorings Park had their first hatch at 12:45 this afternoon.” She noted that the first hatch had its very first fish dinner at 1504 while the second egg was hatching!

Sally is incredible at delayed incubation!

Oh, it’s nice to have some good news!

‘B’ also sent a story from the LA Times. They write: “Cute story in the LA Times today on “How two Big Bear eagles became social media’s hottest love story”.

How two Big Bear eagles became social media’s hottest love story

I really hope it helps raise funds to purchase the land around the nest of Jackie and Shadow!

Thank you for being with us. Take care. See you tomorrow when there will be two — or could there be three?

Thanks, Heidi, for the heads up and to ‘B’ for the very cool article on Jackie and Shadow. If you are a member of The Joy of Ospreys FB, there is a video of the event. Thank you to Moorings Park for the streaming cam that lets us into the lives of Harry and Sally and their osplets.

JC26 is a cutie pie…Sunday in Bird World

1 March 2026

Toby and I were woken up by the phone pinging and pinging around 2330 Saturday night. It wouldn’t stop. What was going on? Turns out the two-story woodframe house at the corner, home to our neighbour Jim Russell for 27 years, was on fire. It went up in flames so quickly that the fire and police personnel could not get into the structure. We still do not know if our neighbour was in the house at the time. Jim was a brilliant eccentric. He had studied math at Cornell and came to Canada in the late 1960s, as I recall. Paramedics and fire crew are still there as little blazes continue to flare up. I am tired. Toby is tired. We were up til 0300 worrying if Jim was in the house and remembering, with great sadness, our neighbours, Bert and Joanne, who died in a house fire across the street in 2011. They were our dear friends. We bought our house form them and Don helped Bert when Joanne was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Memories came in like a tsunami.

I know you will understand when I say that this posting will be short.

There have been a lot of rumours about the Bald Eagle nests this season, with the latest one being that Shadow had disappeared. Shadow is fine. It was confirmed that he was on the eggs last evening, even though the posting said he was MIA. Please check the cameras and exercise caution – there are too many ‘alternative facts’ floating around that cause worry and anxiety.

Thank you SK Hideaways for sending me your videos!

Cholyn Does Bedtime Egg Roll ~ Chortles Wispy Lullaby (2026 Feb 27)
After a day of textbook nest changeovers, Chase retired to his night perch and Cholyn settled in for overnight incubation. After she carefully rolled the two precious eggs, she called out in her unique wispy chortle. Because we’re hopelessly sentimental, we like to think that lovely music was a bedtime lullaby. Whatever it was, it was glorious.

At the Winter Park Florida Bald Eagle nest, Peanut (aka Tiny Tim) is anything but tiny. Looks like a ravenous female to me that second hatch that survived some pretty challenging bonking early on. Peanut really took lessons and was doing a grand job of self-feeding on Saturday.

At the Johnson City nest, Baiba caught Boone feeding his little one JC26 for the first time. https://youtu.be/BYRwO0l-qfE?

From all of us – we wish you a great end to the weekend and a wonderful week. I will be back with you on Friday.

Thank you so much to SK Hideaways for sharing their video list, to the owners of the streaming cams where I took my screen captures – thank you for allowing us into the lives of these amazing birds.

Mr North is MIA…Friday in Bird World

27 February 2026

Greetings Everyone,

Gosh, golly. We have a countdown clock to the arrival of the ospreys in the UK now. Big Red and Arthur are busy at the nest, and there could be eggs in two to three weeks. There are second eggs being laid at the Bald Eagle nests, and it just seems that everything is happening at once. Older eaglets are branching and will be fledging soon.

We are having a ‘yellow alert’ today, which means that winds are blowing up to 100 kph, with the main highway around Winnipeg closed. The ‘red’ lines indicate closed roads.

Ann and Don have gone to The Leaf to be inside with the koi and butterflies. It allowed me and Toby time to remove an old rug, lay down a new one and put the old one in the library area near the woodstove. These rugs cause a negative and a positive. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels love to run and play – the zoomies are incredible. But they tend to ‘slide’ on hardwood and dislocate bones. So carpets are a must – wall-to-wall carpet would be best. I cannot even imagine the amount of cat and dog hair that would attract. Don, on the other hand, cannot afford to get caught and trip and fall. This means they have to be taped down securely. Gosh, golly.

Meanwhile, the animals in the garden are thinking it is spring. We predict that the number of red squirrels might grow this spring!!!!!!!!

Let’s check on some of our Bird World news.

The eaglets at the Sutton Centre have beautiful names!

At Decorah North, Mr North has not been seen for three days at the time of writing this post. It appears that the UM has won the battle for the territory. Mr North was last seen favouring a foot and wing. Many of us adore him, and I hope that he is alright and will find another home. I am going to assume he is ‘missing’, and I am not putting him on the Memorial Wall as yet. He could be resting up to return for another day and another battle.

The owners of the Winter Park nest have selected names. Windows to Wildlife writes:’ “Thank you to everyone for submitting names for the eaglets. We had over 1,200 submissions. The landowners have chosen the following names! WPE1- Brutus, WPE2 – Peanut.”

I missed it. We have two eggs at the ND-LEEF nest!

Donations. I have been talking about donations recently because everyone is finding life challenging. There is, however, a campaign to raise millions – 10 million to be exact – to save the land around the nest of Jackie and Shadow. Here is the information. Please note that this post addresses fraudulent individuals soliciting funds and provides the only donation link. So if you do have a fiver – maybe this is the place to send it!

Note this is on the donation page if you are wondering: “Donate today. The donations made on this site will go directly to the purchase of the property and not to Friends of Big Bear Valley. FOBBV is managing the fundraiser only. All donations are tax deductible. Tax ID # 33-0700417

Due to the limitations set out under the streaming cam, I cannot include images of Jackie and Shadow at their nest.

Jolene and Boone at Johnson City ETSU have a pip in their egg! Baiba has it on video: https://youtu.be/F8Mn8Zyr1Bo?

At Two Harbours, Chase and Cholyn now have two eggs. Isn’t this fantastic?!

Stella and Irvin have three eggs at the US Steel nest in PA.

Rutland is thinking Ospreys.

Scout and Bella have another egg! WingsofWhimsy has it on video: https://youtu.be/e0BRKC5Y3NA?

That is one lucky eaglet at Duke Farms. Dad Eagle continues to bring in the most amazing prey for Mum and Baby.

Thank you so much for being with us today. Please take care. We will be back with you again on Monday.

Thank you to the individuals who created videos, posted notices on FB, created websites for donations for Jackie and Shadow’s region, and the owners of the video cams that allow us to see the lives of these amazing birds. I am grateful to each of you.

Sadness, Sticks, and Snow…late Tuesday in Bird World

17 February 2026

Dear Friends,

I am so sorry to write and tell you that the only egg of Jak and Audacity that carried such hope for another Betty Lou this season has broken.

Send out your love to this amazing Bald Eagle couple. They tried so hard and we hoped with them.

At the Fernow Tower nest of Big Red and Arthur on the Cornell Campus, our 23-year-old Queen of the Red-tail Hawks and her mate, Arthur, have brought in the first sticks to their nest. Cornell Bird Lab caught it on video. https://youtu.be/dERgvuToQS4?

Do we think that Jackie and Shadow are thinking about a second clutch? SK Hideaways has them looking at that nest in the snow. https://youtu.be/2PqA-NX63FY?

So sorry to have to send the news about Jak and Audacity. We were so hopeful. There is a snowstorm on its way here that will begin in a few hours. Heavy snowfall warning with perhaps 16 cm. We will be fine. Please take care of yourself…and before I leave I want to show you an image that ‘R’ sent me from Gainsville, Florida. You might think that nest is in the palm tree but it is on a pole on the other side! Thanks, ‘R’. We will look forward to any report of little ones!

Thank you to Cornell Bird Lab and SK Hideaways for their videos, to the IWS/Explore.org for its camera at Sauces and to each of you for loving our raptor families. Thank you to ‘R’ for that great photograph.

A lovely tribute to Sandy Steers

12 February 2026

Good Evening Everyone,

This tribute to Sandy Steers just came up on my feed. I think that you will enjoy this country music song dedicated to the woman who protected, fought for, and helped us participate in Jackie and Shadows’s lives – their triumphs and their challenges. https://youtu.be/_5WvMvC-ggA?

Take care everyone. See you soon!

Thank you to the owners of the Big Bear Valley streaming cam for allowing us to look into the world of the eagles and to those that created this loving tribute to Sandy Steers.

Sad news out of Big Bear Valley…late Thursday in Bird World

12 February 2026

Hello Everyone,

There is very sad news coming out of the Big Bear Valley. Sandy Steers, the woman behind all of us being able to enjoy watching Jackie and Shadow, has died from a battle with cancer.

https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/big-bear-wildlife-eagle-activist-sandy-steers-dies

KGET covered the story along with dozens of other outlets in the region. https://youtu.be/7eZ6_pnIJ7w?

I will always remember Sandi as being one of the biggest and most devoted advocates for wildlife and, especially, our beloved Jackie and Shadow. Condolences to all those who knew and loved Sandi.

There has been speculation at the Decorah North nest that Mr North was MIA. Well, he isn’t. Buddy’s Mum posted a video today of Mr North letting everyone know is well and present! https://youtu.be/7eZ6_pnIJ7w?

There is relief at the John Bunker Sands Wetlands nest as JBS24 is thriving. The average time for this eaglet to succumb to HPAI, if that was what killed its sibling – which is doubtful now – has passed.

Tiny Tim at the Winter Park, Florida nest is thriving. That little second hatch, five days younger than its older sibling, has struggled and triumphed.

They are looking for name submissions – please give these two babys super names! Note the deadline!

Window To Wildlife: #1Hello, if you’d like to submit names for the eaglets, please see this link: https://forms.gle/7vYPwneMakwbaw3T7 The landowners will be selecting a pair of names that has been submitted. Ending Feb 17

Thank you for being with us for this short announcement about Sandy Steers. Everyone is very sad. I also wanted to catch up with two nests we have been monitoring closely. Take care! See you soon.

Thank you to all the news outlets for their coverage of Sandy Steers contributions to the welfare of wildlife, to the owners of the streaming cams that allow us to look into the lives of the raptors, to Buddy’s Mum for her video of Mr North, and to Window to Wildlife who is asking for our participation in naming those two cute eaglets at Winter Park.

Jak and Audacity have their second egg…Tuesday in Bird World

3 February 2026

Good Morning Everyone,

This has to go first as I missed it so a belated happy birthday to Jackie and Shadow!

And before anything else, a ‘fiver’ will give you the opportunity to vote for the names for Gabby and Beau’s eaglets. But you must hurry!

Great capture of a tandem feeding by Gabby and Beau!

I wish you could have been at story time this afternoon. It was so warm in the conservatory. I started reading – Don and Toby were already there. Calico ran in when she heard my voice and then Baby Hope. The two Calicos stayed for over an hour and then left – and that is when I stopped reading. There was just something about their presence, the sun shining in the glass, and the blue sky. It really was so nice and warm and cosy. The light streaming in demanded that we have story time early, and it was beautiful. We shall switch the time to the early afternoon on these bright sunny days.

SK Hideaways has good news: “Quick news flash: Jackie & Shadow were observed mating on the Lookout Snag at 14:30:55!”

Jak and Audacity’s egg is holding! Send them your continued best wishes.

Bird Flu continues to take lives and now it is the Thames Valley Swans that are under threat.

Race to contain suspected bird flu outbreak among Thames Valley swans https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/feb/02/race-contain-suspected-bird-flu-outbreak-swans?CMP=share_btn_url

It is so wonderful that people like Penny Albright who is vacationing is also sending us news about the local ospreys on Sanibel! Thank you.

Lucille Powell reminds us that Rosie could be arriving at the platform she shares with Richmond in a fortnight!

Storks seem to be returning to certain areas of Europe. In some areas of France, people are beginning to feel the transition from winter to spring. Some are seeing a few daffodils and quince blossoms.

I am so pleased that many are learning about the flightless parrot, the Kakapo, and checking in on the streaming cam. There are so few of these birds left and great care is taken with them just as the NZ DOC does with the Royal Albatross.

Jak and Audacity now have their second egg.

Thank you so much for being with us for this quick check on our friendly raptors. We will be back with you at the end of the week! Please take care of yourself.

Thank you to the creators of the videos that I have linked here today, the authors of the FB posts, and The Guardian for its coverage of the raptors and the environment. I am so grateful. My blog would not be the same without your talents!

Eggs and hatches…Late Monday in Bird World

26 January 2026

Hello Everyone,

Oh, it was a grand day today. -15 at noon. Toby went for a walk with Ellen and I got to attend to some much needed recycling. The decluttering/downsizing continues at a rampant pace which makes me feel rather happy. Less really is more! It will get colder but by next Monday, we are going to be looking at -5. One of our favourite places, Pineridge Hollow, has been closed for renovations and I plan to make it a day for Ann, Don, Toby, and me. Monday is our wedding anniversary and an outing on Tuesday to feed the chickadees and be out in the country without freezing to death is in order. Oh, I can already smell the conifer trees and hear the chickadees sing!

A few quick announcements. I had not expected to be back with you til the end of the week but…

Gosh, those eagles just keeping laying eggs and hatching and doing well!

Good news, really, at the Winter Park, Florida Bald Eagle nest. E2 seems to be figuring out how to survive, and the parents are doing well. There have been some good feedings without any rivalry. If the food keeps coming – and there is a huge hunk of fish on the right side of the nest, all should be well. (I am being positive because siblicide is RARE on Bald Eagle nests compared to other species).

Jackie and Shadow now have their second egg. So egg 1 on the 23rd and egg 2 Monday, the 26th. Whoooooooo yeah! I am really hopeful as these eggs are ‘early’ like last year. Last year, the first egg of 2025 was laid on Jan. 22. The second and third eggs came a few days later on Jan. 25 and Jan. 28. Their first successful chick to hatch was Spirit in 2022.

SK Hideaways has that great moment on video! https://youtu.be/TTBhA0nK7NU?

CBS LA announces the moment! (As well as so many other news agencies – Jackie and Shadow are truly loved!). https://youtu.be/fMlh1KuSPvA?

News of Royal Albatross:

Life at the E1 nest of Anna and Louis II is going along nicely.

Sally and Harry have their second egg at Moorings Park on Monday the 26th. Thanks, Heidi!

The Abu Dhabi Cams on four nests:

The second chick has hatched at John Bunker Sands Wetlands Centre!

I want to remind you that there is now a streaming cam at the Kakapo nest. This is a first, and it is a real treat. Please check out these amazing flightless parrots that are nearly extinct. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/live/BfGL7A2YgUY?

Thank you so much for being with us. Please take care of yourself. So many people are in storm areas. Stay warm, stay safe. We hope to have you with us again soon.

Thank you to Heidi for sending me the note about Moorings Park, to the owners of the streaming cams where we watch our favourite raptor families and use screen captures to tell their stories, to SK Hideaways and others for their videos to bring those lives to life, and to those who post announcements on FB. I am very grateful to each of you. My blog would not have all the news it does without your input.
